Company Seznam.cz, Czech internet No. 1, increased its revenues by 4.7% year-on-year to CZK 4.69 billion. The company generated the income before tax in the amount of CZK 1.4 billion last year and maintained the profitability at the level 30%. Advertising system Sklik contributed most to the year-on-year growth of revenues, it was showing the growth 15% in the content network.
Pavel Zima, co-CEO of Seznam.cz, comments: “We devoted the year 2019 mainly to our homepage and the related personalization of the content for our users. Big media houses and smaller publishers are enormously interested in placing their articles in our never-ending feed; the number of partner’s webs – amounting to three hundred today – testifies to this fact as well. The number of clicks from the homepage to the content of our partners stopped at the number 146 million per month at the end of 2019 and it means 17% increase compared to the previous year,” and he adds that the trend of the increased content consumption on the homepage of the Czech internet No. 1 shows this year as well and it has culminated during the coronavirus epidemic. “We recorded 228 million clicks to the content webs from our home page in March. Compared to March 2019, it means 60% growth,” states Zima.
Mapy.cz, Seznam Zprávy and Prohlížeč experienced product innovations
Mapy.cz started cooperation with Booking.com and users of Apple smart telephones were able to travel with them by car thanks to the CarPlay support. Several services also experienced the new design, for example, Počasí.cz (Weather), Seznam Zprávy (Seznam News) or Prohlížeč (Browser) which is currently used on all platforms by over 1,500,000 unique users. Over 1,200,000 people downloaded it into their mobile telephones last year. Function Kalendář (Calendar) was integrated into Email. After acquisition of 100% ownership interest in the regional radios Expres FM and Classic Praha, the radios became a part of Seznam Group at the beginning of 2019.
This year will be a turning point
According to Pavel Zima, the current year will be the key year for the whole local economy and the Czech internet No. 1 as well. He comments: “We were very careful when planning costs for this year because we anticipated arrival of the economic crisis. Our fears were confirmed by the coronavirus epidemic – the impacts of the epidemic influence the Czech business. Our objective is to maintain a reasonable profitability level in spite of the situation”.
During the state of emergency, the number of views of Seznam.cz homepage and individual content services increased. Coronavirus specials which were produced in almost all Seznam’s services contributed to it a lot. Thanks to the involvement in mapping the users’ position data, over half a million new users downloaded the mobile application Mapy.cz. Zima concludes: “Our ability of fast adaptation to current situation resulted in the fact that for the time being we have well withstood the crisis caused by covid-19. However, I still expect its consequences, in particular at the turn of this and next years. We will only see how we are actually prepared”.
