The global journey of the Czech map application begins. Mapy.cz becomes Mapy.com

Veronika Geltner 26. March 2025

The popular mapping application Mapy.cz is entering a new, global era. In order to assist millions of users worldwide, it is expanding its reach and gradually moving to the Mapy.com domain. The application will thus become more accessible to users from all over the world, while continuing to improve the quality and user experience to which Czech users are accustomed.

“The move to Mapy.com is a step towards greater comprehensibility for foreign users. However, we believe it will also bring benefits to the Czech user through more shared data, experiences and reviews. All of this will help us continue to improve Mapy.com,” explains David Finger, director of Email.cz and Mapy.com at Czech Internet leader Seznam.cz.

Czech brand with a global vision

In the Czech Republic, Mapy.cz is a brand that has gained a strong base of loyal users over the 25 years of its existence. The popularity of the service is also supported by its community approach, where users themselves actively contribute to improving the content. “It was crucial for us to maintain the legacy of the original name while allowing the brand to reach a global audience. The name Mapy.com represents an ideal compromise between preserving the Czech roots and being understandable for international users. The use of the .com domain makes the brand more accessible to a wider audience without losing the link to the original Czech identity,” comments David Finger, adding that the move also simplifies searches and expands the potential of the app abroad, where it is trying to compete with established map services. “The expansion of the app abroad will also bring benefits to Czech users. The map data will have more extensive coverage, and the data will be more accurate”.

Maps.com expands navigation in Europe and adds more features

Full navigation including traffic data is now available in Slovakia, Poland, Austria and Germany. Soon it will also be available in Slovenia, Hungary and Italy. Users can easily get from Prague to the Alps or the Balaton, for example. In addition, drivers from these countries will help to produce data on traffic, accidents, road closures and can report police patrols.

Offline map management will also be improved. Soon, Maps.com will offer a clearer selection of offline areas for foreign regions. The user will be able to easily select the desired area directly from the map.

Later this year, Maps.com will bring support for Apple Watch and Wear OS devices as part of the premium version. Both hitchhiker and navigation features will be available directly in the Maps.com app on smartwatches.

Premium supporters will also get the ability to plan routes more accurately by selecting a specific activity – such as running, gravel biking, stroller walking or scooter riding. There is also the possibility to plan walking routes via ferrata trails.

Changing the domain itself to Maps.com will have no effect on the functioning of the application. “It will be a minimal adjustment that the average user may not even notice. The main point is that it will make the application more understandable and accessible for foreign markets,” continues David Finger.

“Thank you to all our supporters for being part of this exciting journey. Thanks to you, we can keep pushing Maps forward and adding great features that will become an indispensable companion on everyone’s journeys”.
